Realizing Realism
Realism - re·al·ism /ˈrē(ə)ˌlizəm/ noun
the attitude or practice of accepting a situation as it is and being prepared to deal with it accordingly.
"the summit was marked by a new mood of realism"
Realism is important, especially in recovery, because people can be too critical of themselves and of other people. People need to have realistic expectations for work, school, various life situations, and their personal life. In choosing to be realistic we gain clarity, possess insight, and have much more accurate perceptions of one’s surroundings. This essential element of realism also helps life’s stressors such as family relations, managing conflict, job seeking and unemployment, admission into schools, physical health, aging parents, financial burdens, and remaining sober!
